Cara Cara Oranges ( citrus sinensis ) are a mutation of naval oranges that occurred originally in 1976 in Hacienda Cara Cara, Venezuela.
The flesh of Cara Cara oranges is deep orange/red/pink - more like a pink grapefruit than an orange, but the taste is sweeter - more like an orange.
The rich Cara Cara color results from the presence of lycopene - the same stuff found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables.
